So, you want art in your home? I get that. Art is powerful, and it can be a lot of fun to have around, but it’s important to get it right. If you’re not an art expert yourself (and why would you be?), where are you going to find one?

The Internet, of course! If you’re looking for an art expert on the Internet, there are a lot of them out there, but so many of them are amateurs. You don’t want amateurs; you want professionals! And who are the professionals? Well, people like me! Here at my blog I’ve been an art expert for years; my advice has been read by millions. And for a limited time only, I’m offering my advice here directly to you!

Here are some dos and don’ts:

DO listen to your gut. After all, it’s your money—you should get what you really want. But…

DON’T just listen to your gut. Your gut is a lot like those store mannequins. It looks great from the outside, but once you look inside it doesn’t have much going on in there. Why not have both?

DO ask for references. By all means check their references

It’s a great idea. Art enriches our lives. The only problem is that it can be hard to find art that you really love and also doesn’t give you nightmares.

That’s why I created this blog, which is intended to help you choose the right kind of art for your home. As an experienced decorator, I’ve learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t. And now I’m going to share my secrets with you!

…get something that matches your personality. Every person has their own distinctive style. If you’re an energetic and outgoing person, don’t just get something bland and beige—go bold! Pick something colorful or extravagant! If you’re more reserved and quiet, don’t go crazy with color; maybe try something elegant and simple instead. The point is to create art that reflects who you are.*

…get abstract art if it makes sense for the space. If you have a modern or contemporary-looking home, go abstract! Modern art can accentuate the clean lines and open spaces of contemporary design by adding boldness and color to a room.*

…choose something in the same medium as

Did you know that you can get free art in your home? No, not if you can’t afford to buy any. (Though, in that case, why are you reading this?) I mean if you’re getting new flooring or a new fence or whatever.

Here’s the way it works: Someone makes art about what they love. And then they put it on their wall where other people can see it. And then they get new wall-coverings to match the art.

Well, wait — there’s more. Sometimes these people make their own art and sometimes they commission someone else to do it. Anyway, they dig deep into their hearts and come up with an idea that they really love and they put it into a picture that they really like and then they find a way to get it into your living room without giving you a heart attack when you open the box. It’s pretty amazing, actually.

But here’s the thing: not all art works in every home or for every person or for every space or for every situation or for every personality or for every taste or for every budget or for every time of day . . . .

I could go on with this list but I trust I have made my point. There is no one perfect

If you’re a dedicated art lover, or even just someone who likes to look at interesting things on your walls, you probably want to know how to get the best deals when buying art. But if you’re not an expert, it can be hard to know what to look for.

Trying to buy art without knowing what you’re doing is like trying to drive a car with a steering wheel in the back seat. You might do OK, but it’s hard to be sure what’s going on.

Why doesn’t everyone sell their art through galleries? Why don’t galleries sell everything they show? Why don’t artists just sell what they make? Why are there so many different kinds of art dealers and galleries? And who are all these people who seem to work at galleries and dealerships, anyway?

Art is a great addition to any home. Whether you’re a beginner or a collector, you can always learn something new when it comes to art. This article will help guide you on your quest for the perfect piece of art for your home.

TIP! If you are interested in buying art, try to find a quality piece that is in good condition. You may be tempted by that gorgeous painting that has been at the thrift store for years, but if it hasn’t been preserved well, it is probably not worth your time and money.

Now, I am not an art critic. I have a BFA in printmaking and have been doing it professionally for 10+ years now. I am also a self taught artist. So what do I know? My goal with this post is to share the most important things that I have learned while collecting art over the last 16 years.

Taste is very subjective and everyone has different likes and dislikes. But there are some basic guidelines that can help you avoid buying something at a premium price that you really don’t like after all.

1) Don’t buy art just because it’s expensive or someone tells you that you should collect something: Instead, find something that genuinely moves you or makes you feel something. If you think about it, we all spend tons of money on lots of things that we want but don’t need. Collecting art is not about showing off how much money you have or how high your taste is, it’s about finding something that speaks to you, that resonates and makes your home feel like a place where you would want to live.
