Over the years, this image has become a pop art icon and a logo for Marilyn since Andy Warhol first painted in 1962 and then again in 1967 in his famous screen print series. The original photo was taken by Tom Kelley in 1949 for the 20th Century Fox publicity department.

Andy Warhol was the first person to see the potential for art in this kind of self-referentiality – the idea that an image is better understood when you look at how it is perceived. He went on to develop this principle into what we now know as Pop Art.
