Petersham Art Center: Exploring the World of Art through Various Classes

Petersham Art Center is proud to offer a diverse range of classes throughout the spring and summer months, designed to cater to different interests and skill levels. From traditional textile arts to nature-inspired drawing, the center aims to provide a creative outlet for artists of all ages and backgrounds.

Embroidery and Needlework

  • Peggy Schneider, a master textile artist, will teach an introduction to embroidery class on Saturday, April 19, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students will learn basic embroidery techniques to create their own needlework masterpieces.
  • Begins: Beginners are welcome to learn a new skill.

“My love of textiles goes back as far as I can remember,” said Schneider. “I was taught to hand sew and embroider as a child by my mother. I have now been a textile artist for many years and am a member of the Celestial Stitchers Chapter of the Embroidery Guild of America.”

Wool Felted Flowers

Schneider will also teach a class on wool felting with fiber on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. Students will learn how to make a wool felted flower that can be used for fiber artworks, pins, or other fanciful embellishments. Basic sewing skills are recommended for this class.

Trees: Natural History & Sketching

Joe Choiniere, a well-known naturalist, artist, and teacher, will present a two-part class on Sunday, April 27, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. The second part of the class will be presented on Saturday, May 3, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Participants will learn to identify trees, appreciate their mysteries and wonders, and practice sketching what they envision. Choiniere has led workshops, hikes, and nature walks throughout the North Quabbin area.

Basket Making

Sue Morello of Sheldon Farm Baskets in Barre will teach a basket-making class on Saturday, May 17, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Students will learn how to make a spacious market basket.

Mixed Media Class for Kids

A class for ages 8-12, led by artist Katie Walsh, will take place on Saturday, June 28, times to be announced. Walsh is an art teacher in the Winchendon Public Schools and is dedicated to engaging children in artful activities that stimulate their imagination and creativity.
