A visitor to our website wrote to tell us how much he liked this painting, and he asked if it was still available. Fortunately, it was, so we sold it to him.

We get a lot of feedback from visitors, but not many write with questions about specific paintings. This is new for us. Usually we hear something like “I love your paintings” or “your paintings scare me.” Sometimes someone will ask which of two paintings they should buy, but usually not why they should buy one rather than the other.

This was a good question, though. It made us curious about what makes some paintings more appealing than others. Is it just personal taste? Or can you learn to tell whether something will be appealing to other people too?

The best way to figure that out would be to test people in a controlled environment and see what they say. But we don’t have an artificial environment that looks like an art gallery website and has pictures of all our paintings on display; that would be expensive! The majority of the work we do is commissioned. That’s why you won’t see a lot of featured artwork on our shop at any given time; most of it is still in progress.

But sometimes, we have an opportunity to purchase an existing painting. That’s what happened with this piece last year, when we bought it from the artist. We’d seen his work before, we knew that he could paint, and this piece was exactly what we were looking for.

They come from different backgrounds, countries, cultures and artistic disciplines. We carefully select the work of each artist featured on singulart and make sure that it meets our high standards, before adding it to the collection.

This is a painting of a famous person. It was painted by an anonymous artist, who used photos and other images to create the image.

This is a painting titled “The Breakfast,” showing two people at breakfast. One figure looks like the artist’s father; another looks like his grandfather. The background looks like an antique photo album he found on eBay, but it was actually created by scanning in old family photos, cutting them up in Photoshop, and pasting them together to create new scenes.

This is a photo of what appears to be one woman with two faces side-by-side. But if you look more closely you’ll see that the figure has been cut out and pasted over another image.
