Optical Illusion Art aims to change that.

Optical Illusion Art is a space for discussion about the role of visual arts in our society and for sharing any kind of thoughts or experiences connected with optical illusion art.

First, the artist has to understand the science behind the illusion, then apply it in a way that is creative and surprising. The artist’s own style and creativity must come into play as well. A good optical illusion will be fun, intriguing and make you want to share it with your friends.

How do artists create illusions? There are two general ways to create an illusion: 1.) by altering something in the picture that has nothing to do with the actual illusion, or 2.) by altering something in the picture that does have something to do with the actual illusion. The first method is what I call “tricking” the viewer and is often used in slight-of-hand magic. The second method is a more subtle approach and can be very effective.

Ways of tricking include: Anamorphosis, forced perspective, hidden images, pareidolia, shadow play, trompe l’oeil and camera obscura.

Ways of not tricking include: abstract art, flicker fusion (video), simulated depth of field (video), simulated motion blur (video), simulated tone mapping (video) and 3D computer graphics.”

The fact that optical illusions are so effective, yet also so simple and common, makes them a perfect example of how the art works. There is something about our brains that makes us want to see what’s in front of us as a single, coherent image. When it isn’t, we feel tricked. We want to see what’s in front of us as real (even if it’s not).

Trompe l’oeil is one way artists use this trick. They create an optical illusion that tricks us into thinking we’re looking at something else–usually at something more interesting or beautiful than the thing we’re actually looking at. The effect is more dramatic and obvious when they paint an illusion directly onto a flat surface, but artists have used this trick throughout history to make their work more interesting and important.

But there’s nothing magic about trompe l’oeil paintings. Any time an artist plays with our sense of reality, he’s using this trick. It’s just a lot less obvious when you can’t touch the artwork or walk around it. When we read books, for example, the author creates images in our minds by describing them to us in words. That description is creating an illusion–it’s making us think we’re seeing something that

Tattooists, like most artists, are a rare breed. You can’t just wake up one day and decide that you will be one. You must have a passion for drawing or art in general before you even think of becoming a tattoo artist. And then you must have a love for the human body and an understanding of its anatomy before you can even begin to consider practicing this art form. It takes a lifetime of dedication and practice to become the best tattooist that you can possibly be.
