The finest artworks ever created, including priceless works by artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Edvard Munch, are up for auction in London this week.

The Old Master Paintings sale on Wednesday will feature works by Hans Holbein the Younger, Canaletto, Claude Lorrain and Rubens, with some pieces fetching more than £10m.

Art dealer Charles Saatchi has put his own collection of Old Masters on show at Christie’s in London in the lead-up to the auction.

Perhaps the most valuable painting of all time is a portrait of Saint Jerome that Leonardo da Vinci made in about 1500. Now owned by Bill Gates, it was stolen from a gallery near Paris in 1911 and was never recovered.

The Mona Lisa by Leonardo is also thought to be worth close to £10m. In 2010 it became the world’s most valuable artwork after a Japanese billionaire agreed to pay $90m (£56m) for it.

Artisans and artists have been producing stunning works of art for many years. Some of these artworks have become so famous that they are known all around the world. There are plenty of paintings by famous artists in museums, galleries, and private collections that are valued at more than $100 million. Other artworks are famous because they are so historically important that their value is priceless.

The interesting thing about famous artworks is that there is a lot to know about them. For example, the Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre in 1911 but was quickly recovered by the Paris police. It is believed that Leonardo da Vinci used a mirror to help him paint the portrait of Lisa del Giocondo, an Italian noblewoman who was married to a wealthy silk merchant. The Mona Lisa is one of only two paintings made by Leonardo da Vinci where he signed his full name. The other painting also belongs to the Louvre and is called La Bella Principessa.

In addition to priceless works of art, there are also some valuable masterpieces that you can buy if you have $100 million or more in expendable income. Here are some examples:

1) Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I by Gustav Klimt – This

I have always wanted to be a painter. I was inspired as a kid by the masters. I like to think that if I were born in a different time and place, I would be hanging out with Rembrandt and other painters who worked for royalty.

Why do some artists become famous for their art?

I wanted to know more about the history of painting so I started a website. Over the last 5 years I have learned a lot about the masters.

I am going to share this information with you so you can learn how they achieved greatness and why they are famous.

Art is, by definition, the creation of something that didn’t exist before, and most art is about change. An artist can track the changing values of a culture, like the aging hippies in Easy Rider , or a single person through time, like Edvard Munch’s “The Scream,” or a relationship that grows and shrinks over time.

Artists can show us things we never would have seen otherwise. The clichéd example is that a painting of a tree looks more like a tree than does an actual tree: we see a general shape with some leaves on it, but the painter sees details and textures that we don’t see until someone points them out to us.

But art doesn’t just describe what already exists in the world; it creates new worlds as well. A movie set in ancient Rome looks nothing like an actual Roman city; it’s an artistic creation of what people think Rome must have been like. Art can be experimental , trying out new ways of seeing things that might never catch on with everyone else. It can be beautiful , so that even if it’s not creating anything new or describing anything we’ve never seen before, it can still provoke awe just through its aesthetic perfection. And art can be political , taking sides in debates
