jwd art space is a gallery for artists located in New York City. I run the organization along with my partner, Julie Wurth. Our gallery was opened in 2013 and its main focus is showcasing new talent to the public. The name jwd is an acronym for Julie Wurth Designs, which has been my brand for over 15 years now. We also sell paintings and sculptures from both local and international artists through our online store at www.jwdartspace.com.

The idea of running an art space came about three years ago when I was planning on traveling to Japan for a vacation with my partner and I wanted to bring something back for my family and friends who couldn’t come along with me on the trip. Seeing as I am an artist myself, I decided to paint something that would be a nice souvenir of our visit to share with everyone else. I ended up painting a Japanese girl, not really knowing what to expect when it came time to sending it off via delivery methods, but surprisingly it made it there basically in one piece!

Having sold many pieces of art over the years, I knew that people really enjoyed being able to have something that they can enjoy and cherish forever, but sadly most everyone lives far away from where I live or

The name JWD comes from the initials of the founder, my mother, Judy Weil Davis.

The gallery was established in 1981 in a 10×20 foot room at 1427 East Ave. in Rochester, NY. It was a small space on the second floor of a two-storey Victorian house owned by my parents, who lived downstairs. While I worked on my Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Rochester School of Visual and Performing Arts, I used it to exhibit and sell my drawings and paintings. Gradually I began to realize that I wanted to continue to do so after completing my graduate work.

In September 1985, I opened JWD Gallery at 611 E. Main St., across from the George Eastman House and next door to the Winton Guest House in the heart of Rochester’s historic Corn Hill neighborhood. This space was twice as large as the original one, and there was a separate entrance on the side street where I also had living quarters. The location was ideal for me; my studio was upstairs and I could easily walk downstairs for a bite or a glass of wine after work or during the day if I needed some refreshment or inspiration.

I hung an exhibition almost every month for more than fifteen years. Many were group

JWD ART SPACE will present contemporary works made by local, national and international artists. The artworks can be traditional paintings or sculptures as well as multimedia installations or performances. JWD ART SPACE will also provide space for showing new technologies and media.*

We have a show coming up in April that we’re very excited about. It’s our first group show and, as you can see from the list of participating artists, we have a great group of artists to work with.

We’ve been working hard to get the word out about the event and would love for you to help us spread the word by sharing this post or inviting your friends on Facebook/Twitter to check it out.
