Black and white art is a special kind of art. It has its own history and evolution, it’s own aesthetic and experience. It’s important to understand how it works so that you can appreciate it better.

Art was made in black and white for almost the whole history of the arts. The first paintings were monochromatic and over time the number of colors used in paintings grew, but only until the 20th century did artists find themselves working in color all the time. Color photography was invented at the end of the 19th century, but it took another half-century before artists began to work with it regularly. And even when they did, they still worked mostly in black and white (think of Ansel Adams’ photographs).

Black and white has a different feeling than color. The lack of color means that you have to look harder to see what’s really there. You have to really look at things if you want to know what they are because your brain automatically fills in details for you when you’re working with color (think about how much easier it is to identify objects when you’re reading a book than when you’re watching TV).

I’m a black and white artist, but I’ve always been fascinated by color. Perhaps this is why I have always loved photography. But when I try to work in color, I feel like the medium is fighting me. I feel like my art is being sacrificed to a higher cause: the need to make everything as lifelike as possible.

Trying to make things look realistic in color photography was already difficult enough, but now there are so many new challenges that it’s almost impossible to keep up. You can’t get a good exposure without a very high-quality sensor (which translates into a lot of money), you can’t get detail in your shadows without using ridiculously high ISOs (which translates into more noise), and even if you do manage to get a good shot, you often have to spend hours of post-processing just to achieve something that looks decent.

When we see these effects used in advertising or on magazine covers, it usually looks great. But when we use them ourselves, if we aren’t careful, they will ruin our photos.

The solution is simple: let go of your desire for the perfect image and focus instead on the story you want to tell. If any part of your image doesn’t contribute directly to that story, cut

You may be familiar with some of the more famous black and white photographs like the “Kiss” by Alfred Eisenstaedt or Ansel Adams’s “Moonrise, Hernandez.”

Many are probably familiar with the other famous black and white photograph taken by Robert Doisneau. It depicts a young couple kissing on the street in front of a Parisian cafe.

Taken in Paris in 1950, it has become one of the most iconic images in photography. It has been published and republished thousands of times. But what most people don’t know is that this famous black and white photograph was originally created as color!

I recently came across a copy of the original 1950 color photograph. It was taken on April 16, 1950 by Robert Doisneau for a series entitled “Love In The City.”

Doisneau had just returned from WW II where he was a member of the French Resistance. Upon his return to Paris after years away, he became aware that many things had changed – especially among Parisian youth. Although he himself had not yet married, he began to notice how much more freely people expressed themselves – especially young couples.

Embracing these new attitudes towards life, Doisneau set out to explore this newfound freedom among youth through his photography

In the past few years, black and white photography has grown in popularity. The reasons for this are numerous and include the fact that there’s no need for a darkroom or developing, as well as the fact that it can be done in just about any kind of light using today’s technology.

Black and white photography is an excellent medium to learn your craft because it forces you to think about composition and lighting–the two most important aspects of photography–in a more direct way. It’s also a good medium to shoot in if you’re just starting to experiment with film because it produces creative results without having to worry about color processing and all of the potential issues that come with it.
