Hans Rudolf “Ruedi” Giger was born in Chur, Graubünden, Switzerland on February 5th 1940. He spent most of his childhood in Chur spending much of his time drawing, making sculptures and inventing stories about monsters that would come to life from his nightmares. In Zurich he studied architecture and industrial design at the School of Applied Arts for four years. He then went on to study at the Academy of Fine Arts.

After graduation in 1966 he became a set designer for the Ballet Company which took him all over Europe. This is when his career as an artist really began to take off. From 1970-75 he worked with Oscar winning director Federico Fellini designing and creating sets for him.

Here is a brief biography of the artist. H.R. Giger was born in the small town of Chur, located in the eastern Alps region of Switzerland. His mother was a commercial illustrator and his father an archaeologist, which gave him a very early interest in both science and art.

This is where he found his love of painting as well as appreciating the works of Salvador Dali, one of his favorite artists. He also saw himself as an alien and felt like he did not fit in with most people around him. It was these things that helped to make Giger’s work distinctive, like the way he combined industrial machinery with organic forms to create monster-like aliens.

He began his professional career as an interior designer but soon gave this up to pursue painting full time. He created his first surrealist works while attending the School of Applied Arts in Zurich, Switzerland. He later studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zürich from 1959 to 1961 and then went on to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1963 to 1966*. Also during this time, he met famous Swiss architect Le Corbusier and became involved with the Art Brut movement (also known as outsider art).

The Alien franchise, as well as his own work, has made Giger one of the most widely recognized and prolific artists in the world. He won a number of prestigious awards, including a Grammy for Best Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Album with Celtic Frost in 1992.

Toward the end of his life, Giger’s paintings were exhibited at the H.R. Giger Museum (founded in 1997) in Gruyeres.

Tobias Richter was born on February 5, 1974 in Geisingen, Germany and moved to Switzerland at the age of two. He started playing guitar at the age of ten and played in several bands as a teenager. In 1994 he founded the industrial/electro band “Die Warzau” (after H.R. Giger’s pet name for his wife) with Andreas Schellenberger who had also been a member of the bands Violent Onsen Geisha, The Klinik and Fräulein Mirda & die Tuffel-Gang).
