The aim of this blog is not to make people who aren’t artists artists, but rather to help those who are artists become better at their craft and perhaps (the most important part) have fun in the process.
Tutorials and tips on how to make an awesome canvas painting are provided for free here, so you don’t need to search for websites that cost money (like YouTube), where most of the time they just tell you what you already know but don’t help with anything else.

1. Prepare the Canvas
When you use a canvas for painting, the surface of the canvas may be either smooth or textured. The smoother the canvas is, the better your painting will turn out. (For more information on this topic, please check my other post: How to Make an Awesome Canvas Painting)
After you have cleaned your surface and stretched it on a frame, you should protect your painting by applying a coat of gesso. Gesso is a white paint that creates a smooth surface and seals the fibers of the canvas to prevent bleeding of colors.
The right way to do it is to apply gesso with a roller, so that it covers evenly every part of your canvas without leaving any visible texture. Remember: it’s better to have too much gesso than too little!
Every once in a while, you want to paint on canvas. You may be an artist or someone who wants to give it a try.
I have one piece of advice, and it’s the best advice anyone could ever give you: Go out and find a canvas.
Canvas is everywhere, if you know where to look. Any arts and crafts store will have it. Look in the back of stores selling framing supplies; you’ll usually find a pile of canvases covered with plastic that you can cut through to make your own painting. If you’re buying a canvas because you want something to hang on your wall, look at the back of the canvas before you buy it. Some are pre-stretched (meaning they are ready to hang), some aren’t. If you find one that isn’t, take it anyway–you can stretch it yourself later with a few tools.*
When I paint on canvas, I start by laying down two coats of cheap white acrylic gesso. It’s cheaper than oil paints; I bought a quart for $7 at my local art store.** When dry, it gives me an even surface for painting and protects the canvas from dents or rips later. It also makes my colors go on more smoothly and evenly.
There is an easy way to make a painting on canvas. All you need is some kind of a frame and a piece of canvas that you can buy at any craft store. You can also use an old bed sheet to put paint on.
You will also need a paintbrush, acrylic or oil paints and whatever colors you want for your painting.
When you have all your supplies gathered, you first need to decide how big you want your painting to be. Then measure the size of the frame with the pencil and place it around the inside of the frame on the canvas. Now take a pair of scissors and cut off extra canvas from around the pencil line until it just barely touches it all around.*Remove pencil from inside frame.*Next, take some fabric glue and spread it evenly over the back of your drawing.*Allow to dry.*
Now you are ready to paint! Use a small brush for details and bigger ones for backgrounds. Before applying color, make sure that your canvas is completely dry by rubbing it with your fingers or by spraying a fixative spray over it (this will prevent smearing).

For painting on canvas, the first step is to choose your canvas size. A standard size for a painting is 16×20 inches, but if you want to work with a different size, it’s very easy to adjust the size of the image to fit any frame or canvas you prefer.
A standard frame for a 16×20 painting would be 18×24. This means that for every inch in height of your canvas art, you will need a frame with an extra half inch on each side. You can order this type of frame from lots of places online, or you can go to your local arts and crafts store.
There are always other options if you want to try something different. For example, some people like gallery wrapped canvases which are ready to hang without a frame. They do not have an extra border around them and they look just like a framed piece of art when they are hung up on the wall.
If you have lots of extra room in your budget for art supplies, it’s always fun to get creative with all kinds of unique materials for making your own artwork! You can make awesome abstract paintings by using everything from tissue paper to salt dough and even coffee grounds!

The best way to learn how to paint on canvas is to join an art club. The club will have a master painter who will guide you through the different stages of painting.
In the first stage, you will learn how to mix colours and apply them to the canvas. The master painter will help you understand what colours blend well together and what colours do not. In the second stage, you will start painting the background of your painting. It is important that your background be as perfect as you can make it because it is very difficult to cover up a mistake in the background once it is completed.
Towards the end of this stage, your master painter will suggest that you start with the main characters or subjects of your painting. One of the most important things here is that you always use a reference image for all characters or subjects in your painting. This image should be as big as possible and always in colour. Finally, before completing your painting, make sure that you are satisfied with all parts of it and that they all fit together nicely.
