Vexels are made with many layers. They can be made in Photoshop or GIMP, or any other image editing software which allows you to draw on separate layers.

Vexel art is easy to make, so let’s make some vexel art. This is how I made the picture at the top of this blog. It’s made entirely with the computer, using only software you can download for free. The picture is a portrait of myself, but it’s not a photograph because it’s not made of light. It’s made of pixels, little colored blocks that are about as big as a pencil eraser.

I’ll use Photoshop to draw a picture that looks like me. I could have used other programs, but this is the one I know best. I’ll make my face a bunch of red and white pixels, then copy and paste them into a black background to make them stand out from the rest of the picture. Here’s the next step:

The head is too big compared to the body for my taste, so I’m going to shrink it down and move it over. Then I’m going to paste it onto a black background so you can see what it really looks like:

There are several ways to create a vexel:

-use a program called vexel, which is free to use and can be found on the web. I don’t recommend this method, as it’s very time consuming (unless you already have a good image to work with)

-draw the vexel by hand, then scan it in. This could take some time but if your drawing skills are pretty good, then this might be the best way for you to go.
