So it’s not a gallery of perfect portraits. It’s a blog about getting custom pet portraits from an artist who specializes in animal portraiture. The art is gorgeous–look at the little girl with her dog:

The first time I saw that portrait, I thought it must be Photoshopped, because the dog’s eyes look so real. But no; it’s just the artist’s skill at capturing them:

This is an article about how to get something you want. It is not a persuasive article. It does not argue that you should get pet portraits on canvas, or persuade you that they are worth the money. It doesn’t argue with anyone else who thinks they are too expensive or are bad investments or whatever. It just says how to go about getting them if you want one.

The most common way to get a professional portrait of your favorite animal is to hire a local, in-home pet photographer. These local photographers are great for the quick snapshot, but their end results are not usually worth the price tag.

There are other options such as hiring a freelance artist, but who has time to search through countless portfolios? I know I don’t! That’s why I have created this site for you.

If you are considering commissioning a piece of art for your pet, Pet Portraits on Canvas is an excellent place to start. They have a very large selection of pet portraits and custom art from various artists.

The artwork on the site isn’t just limited to dogs, cats, horses and other animals – they have artwork featuring many types of animals including reptiles, birds and even fish.

The project started as a fun way for me to take better photos of my pets. Most people have seen the traditional pet portrait: a snapshot with a plain background, usually from above and slightly off to the side.

I wanted something different. I’ve previously worked with a professional photographer, and I love her artful style. But her $200-per-photographing fee was more than I could afford.

So, I bought a DSLR camera, an M-series 50mm 1.8 lens and a lighting kit, and started photographing my pets on my dining room table. The results were good. Not great (yet), but good enough that I knew I could create stunning portraits if I just got help with some of the technical aspects of photography (like focus).

Thing is, I soon discovered that this hobby wasn’t just about making pretty pictures; it was about telling the stories behind them by capturing moments in time that can never be recreated. That aspect of photography turned out to be even more fun than the artistic side. It turned out that my favorite part of the process was getting to know each animal’s personality so well that when the perfect photo op presented itself, I’d recognize it and capture their best side in an instant.
