Yes, I’ve seen it. It’s the one where a guy is playing guitar and singing, and there’s a girl behind him, and she has her arms around his waist, and they are both looking at each other, and they are both smiling. Or something like that.
The artist who drew that picture is a genius. Now that you mention it, I’d like to meet him or her.
This is the kind of picture that probably takes about an hour to draw, maybe two hours if the artist is new to the subject matter–which he or she probably isn’t because this kind of picture has been popular for a long time.
If you hire a freelance artist who specializes in one line drawings to do 100 of these pictures, you will have spent about $30 an hour for those hours. If you hire someone who does three-line drawings instead (like the guy holding up three fingers), you will have spent about $60 an hour.
But if you hire an experienced commercial artist to do a full-color drawing of this scene–and pay them by the hour–you will be spending something like $300 per hour. That’s ten times as expensive as doing it yourself!
I am not saying that you should never spend $300
One line drawings are pretty popular on the internet. The most famous of them all is the one of a dog sitting by a fire with his head in his hands.
It’s funny, but it’s also pretty hard to do well. It takes a lot of skill to draw something recognizable in only one line, and that’s why I’d suggest hiring a freelance artist who specializes in one liners.
Over the past decade, there has been an explosion in the number of freelance artists who specialize in one-line drawings. Their work can be seen in the margins of newspapers and magazines, on street corners, and on subway platforms.
Have you ever noticed how much trash is on the floor? We need to address this problem, and we need to do so now. I propose that we hire a freelance artist who specializes in one-line drawings.
The artist’s job would be to go around with a broom and sweep up all the trash. I know what you’re thinking: That sounds too easy. But think about all the trash you encounter every day, whether it be on the street or at work or at home or anywhere else. It is overwhelming, right? But think about how much time you spend looking for places to throw your trash away! You can’t just leave it on the floor because people will trip! And if you put it in a public garbage can someone will steal it!
We could solve this problem by hiring a freelance artist who specializes in one-line drawings. The artist would simply sweep up all the trash with his brush, then use his pen to draw a line around it. Problem solved!
I’m no expert in economics, but
Hire an artist and give them exactly one line to draw. This can be a single straight or curved line, or a collection of simple shapes and/or letters.
The artist can use any method they want to create the image with their line. They can start by hand, but if they want to use a computer to aid in the process that’s fine too.
This is a great idea for anyone who wants to make an image for a blog post or for a presentation. A few years back, I hired a photographer to take some headshots of me. He delivered some excellent images and went on to do the photography for my website. But he also happened to be a talented artist and did some one line drawings of people in the studio which were amazing.
If you have a great idea for a logo, but don’t have the artistic talent to draw it, there are artists who will draw anything you tell them in one line. So you send them a rough description of what you have in mind. They return something that looks like a stick figure drawing of your idea. You respond with some corrections and add-ons, and they send you back an improved version. And so on until you get to where you want to be. If your idea isn’t very specific, or if the artist is just better than you at seeing how to make it work, this can be a great way to get what you want at a reasonable price.
T-shirts are the obvious place for one line art. But I’ve also seen it used for web sites and even logos.
I am looking for an artist who does one line illustrations, preferably of objects with a three dimensional quality. I am creating a series of short films that are an homage to 50s B movies and would like to use these illustrations as the intro and outro. The films are about two minutes long and the cost is $200 per film. Please email me if you’re interested.
