Mixed media art is an extremely versatile art form. It can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be. The great thing about mixed media is that there are no rules, just guidelines.

TIP: Always plan your piece of art first in a sketchbook or on loose paper, preferably with some sketches and notes to coordinate your ideas.

Once you have finished your sketch, transfer the sketches to paper that is appropriate for your project, usually either watercolor paper or illustration board.

TIP: Use watercolor pencils to create a mock-up of your final project so you can make changes before putting paint to canvas.

What is Mixed Media Art? Mixed media art is basically what it sounds like — art that involves more than one media type. The most common types of mixed media art are collage, printmaking, and assemblage.

Since the early 20th century artists have been breaking down the distinction between mediums, even creating art that combines painting with photography, poetry with sculpture, and sound with textiles. Artists have also taken elements from more than one artistic medium to create new forms. For example, Dada artists like Man Ray used photography to create paintings in which text blocks were arranged on a painted surface that looked just like a photograph.

The term came into use at the end of the 1970s with the rise of postmodernism. It was used as a way to describe both contemporary art and traditional techniques that used new materials or nontraditional methods.[2]

Mixed media is essentially an umbrella term for artworks made from a combination of materials commonly found in visual art: sculpture, drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, sound recording and video among others.
