Dheeraj Kolte did a great study on Gaitonde’s Warli paintings and concluded that “The essence of his artistic expression is derived through the structures inherent in his subjects.”

These paintings are basically done with charcoal sticks on hand-woven palm leaf mats called phasa. The reason why they do their painting on phasa is because they don’t use any other mediums as they believe it will destroy their culture and tradition.
