A stencil is a template of a shape that is used to create an image or pattern by applying paint through a “stencil mask” or “stencil sheet”. Stencils are used as a more controlled way of painting than other methods such as spatter, drip and fling. By limiting the amount of paint that can be placed on the paper, the colours blend together more easily, and it is easier to produce gradients and tone.

The idea for this article came from seeing an abstract piece made with stencils in the beautiful book Indian Art. The paintings were all or mostly shades of yellow. I wanted to try a piece like that (I like working with only one colour) but I wasn’t sure how to do it, so I decided to make some stencils and experiment with them. In fact, I am pretty sure you can make any abstract painting using stencils!
