He had no formal artistic training but was determined to become an artist. After graduating from high school in 1884, he worked briefly as an office clerk in New York City but returned home in 1885 due to his poor health.
Tentative steps toward artistic maturity were marked by other similar scenes of urban contemplation. A few months later, while recovering from a serious respiratory illness, he created the famous painting “The Terminal” (1888).
