When I was in college I belonged to the Cherokee Club. As a proud member of the Cherokee Nation, I traveled back home to Oklahoma every weekend where I could ride horses, go to pow-wows, and meet up with some of my family members. After graduating from college I moved away from Oklahoma, but I have always been interested in my native background. When I was given the opportunity to review some Native American artwork, I jumped at the chance.

The history of the great Cherokee Nation is marked by a strong and vibrant culture that infused all aspects of life. In addition to their rich heritage, the Cherokee people developed some of the greatest art forms in North America.

The Cherokee people are believed to have migrated from Asia around 2,000 years ago. The name “Cherokee” is derived from a Iroquois word meaning “people who live in the mountains.” The tribe soon settled into what is now western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. They became known as one of the most resourceful and advanced tribes in North America.

Tribal members were farmers, hunters, gatherers and traders – they had strong diplomatic ties with other tribes and nations throughout the area, including those in Alabama, Georgia, Illinois and the Carolinas. As an agrarian society, they grew crops such as beans, corn, squash, pumpkins and tobacco along with native fruits such as persimmons and grapes. Women used gourds for utensils while men fashioned weapons such as bows and arrows out of wood.*
