Art is a thing that has a history, and in the art of today we see the continuation of that history. Art allows us to reflect on past cultures, to see what they valued, and how they presented it. It often helps us understand our own culture better as well.

Today’s art serves many purposes besides providing decoration for homes and offices. It can be used to tell a story or convey a message. Sometimes it is the artist’s intention to create a particular mood or feeling in those who observe the work of art. And art can be a reflection of the values and history of a particular culture.

Famous artists from many eras have left behind works that are admired today because of their unique styles, their use of color and texture, and their skill at capturing the essence of things in their design.

The range of options makes it hard to make the right decision. The usual response is to look at the most famous artists, which I did. And I found that Damien Hirst and Jeff Koons have both done paintings of spots, or pills, or flowers.

For some reason, I was not comforted.

I decided instead to ask a painter who does not work in a gallery about what he thought was an interesting subject for an artist to do. He said he thought “abstract expressionism” was pretty much dead as a movement. But it’s not entirely dead. So I asked him what he thought was interesting about abstract expressionism, and he said that there were two directions you could go: toward art with recognizable imagery (like you might get from a modern-day Degas) or toward art that approaches randomness (like you might see from Robert Motherwell).

One of his examples of the first kind was Barnett Newman’s “Voice of Fire,” which I already knew about and like; one of his examples of the second kind was Jackson Pollock’s “Full Fathom Five.” This one I did not know about and didn’t like. So I looked up a picture of it and saw that it seemed like nothing but splotches on

I have been working for the past few days on a new website. The inspiration behind this website was my work as a photographer and most recently as the owner of a photography business. I am currently in the process of starting this website and hope to keep it updated with blogs and stories about what is going on in my life.

I hope that you will enjoy reading some of my blog posts as much as I enjoy writing them.

If you like what you see, please feel free to share it with others by using one of the social media sharing buttons that you will find on each page of this site. I also welcome comments and feedback on any blog post you are reading. Comments are always appreciated, positive or negative. As long as they are constructive and add value to the conversation I welcome them all.

With that said, grab your favorite beverage and start browsing around!
