In the Golden Age of comic books, the 1940s and 1950s, comics were primarily aimed at children. The heroes were teenagers, or less often young adults who had just recently debuted as superheroes. But starting in the 1960s, comics started to be aimed more at an older audience. The villains became more realistic and the storylines became more complex.
The Silver Age of comics began in 1956 with a reboot of the Flash character by DC Comics publisher and founder, Julius Schwartz, and writer Robert Kanigher. It was characterized by a return to science fiction themes, social relevance, and a fascination with life on other planets.
Towards the end of the 1960s, superhero titles declined in popularity again. The rise of comic-book specialty stores in this period led to a sharp increase in the number of comics sold, but also made it difficult for non-specialty stores to carry comics prominently. Thus from about 1967 onwards comic books were no longer distributed through newsstands/head shops but rather through magazine distributors (non-comic book specialty stores). This ended the era when anyone walking into a store could purchase a copy of any comic they wanted.*
