Jean Michel Basquiat was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 22, 1960. Basquiat had an Afro-Caribbean father and a Puerto Rican mother. He began drawing at the age of four, was headstrong at school, and had a reputation for being a troublemaker.
Basquiat dropped out of high school, but eventually gained recognition as a street artist in the late 1970s and early 1980s. His graffiti works were based on the writings of William Blake and on the urban poetry of The Last Poets.
The Whitney Museum in Manhattan held a major retrospective of his work in 1995. In 1997, he died of a heroin overdose at the age of 27 which was ruled accidental.*
