Since the early 1980s, the art market has experienced a sustained boom that led to the meteoric rise of prices for works by the most sought-after artists. Today, buyers and sellers search online databases and auction results to estimate artworks’ values, regardless of whether they are painting, sculpture or drawing. Among these artists are Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol. Both of them are considered as great artists who changed the art world forever. Their works have been sold for record breaking amounts in auctions; however, their respective market values differ widely. The purpose of this paper is to analyze how two major factors such as popularity and artistic merit affect artworks’ value.

When comparing artworks created by these two artists we will try to answer the following questions: Which artist’s work is worth more? And why? What factors affect an artwork’s value? How do buyers’ expectations determine artworks’ value? To answer these questions, this paper will compare three major categories: composition and structure (the way the artwork is made), style (the mood it portrays) and impact (the effect it had on the public). This paper will also compare the colors used in each piece of work.

Wile Jean-Michel Basquiat is not as well known, he’s still considered a famous artist and has a strong fan base. So what motivates an art collector to invest in Basquiat or Warhol?

I’ve been a collector of contemporary art for years, but I only recently became interested in collecting Jean-Michel Basquiat. It’s true that his work is very expensive but I have found that it can be worth the expense. You see, several years ago I made an investment in one of Andy Warhol’s works. This was my first experience with contemporary art and I didn’t know much about the difference between artists like Warhol and Basquiat. Now that I’m more familiar with current trends, I’ve decided to share my knowledge with others so that they can make informed decisions about investing in contemporary art without overpaying for their purchases.*

Basquiat’s works have been auctioned at Christie’s and Sotheby’s for prices ranging from $22,000 to $5 million. Warhol’s works are also auctioned at major auction houses like Sotheby and Christie’s for prices ranging from $10-$43 million. What is the difference in value in these two artists’ works? Why do the Warhols sell for such a higher price?

The price difference between Basquiat and Warhol is likely due to several factors: rarity, subject matter, and popularity.

I. Rarity of Basquiat’s works: Basquiat was only 27 years old when he died of a drug overdose on August 12, 1988. He had not yet fully established his reputation as a leading artist. Most of his most famous paintings were made prior to his death. As a result, Basquiat’s works are rarer than Warhol’s because they were not produced in as great of quantities (Warhol was still producing art during this time). As one expert puts it, “At the time of his death he’d only done about 60 paintings.” Furthermore, the value of his work increased after his death due to high demand.

II. Subject matter: The subject matter of Basquiat

The auction of the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol in November 2013 was among the most anticipated sales of contemporary art ever. The two artists were both born in New York City, but they had very different upbringings. Warhol’s family was poor, whereas Basquiat’s father was a prominent lawyer who paid for his son to attend elite private schools. After attending college and studying art on scholarship, Basquiat became a prolific artist while Warhol began his career as a commercial illustrator. While both artists are considered by many to have been geniuses, their bodies of work vary greatly.

The art of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol has been compared since the 1980’s when both were dubbed “enfants terribles” by the media. Both artists’ careers, however, were completely different as their art and life experiences are very different.

Basquiat was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 22nd, 1960. Basquiat’s mother was a Puerto Rican artist who encouraged him to draw from a very young age. He attended the High School of Art and Design and the Pratt Institute where he met his mentor, painter Al Diaz. Diaz taught Basquiat how to paint, and introduce him to the world of graffiti and street art. In 1979, Basquiat was one of the founding members of Graffiti Times Square with Al Diaz and Crash (Donovan Wylie). He had his first solo exhibit “Beat Bop” at Mercer Gallery in New York City in 1980 and an article written by Steven Harvey on Basquiat by The Village Voice was published which exposed his work to a wider audience. His work after this time consisted mainly of painting on canvas with acrylic paints. His new work sold for thousands which made him famous in the New York art scene.*
