Before I came to art school, I had heard of rules and etiquette in the art world. But it wasn’t until my first semester that I realized that this seemingly boring subject was going to be very important to me.

The basic etiquette of art has been around since the beginning of time. With the many changes in technology and culture, there are of course some differences between the modern version and that which was passed on from generation to generation. However, these changes do not deter from the unspoken rules of conduct for artists.

I feel that it is vitally important for artists to understand and follow these rules as they will be helpful in your professional life outside of school. It is also important for you as an artist to understand why certain actions are inappropriate in order to make more informed decisions about your own artwork and career development. Understanding these rules will also help you to feel more comfortable in a group setting with other artists, or when working with someone else’s artwork.

I have broken down the etiquette into four different categories: basic rules, visiting someone else’s studio, critiquing someone else’s work and having your work critiqued.

The art world has its own rules and etiquette that are important for artists to understand. This page will help you with some of the basics like showing up on time, being respectful and polite, staying calm and professional as well as other guidelines for success in the art world.

Art etiquette is the unwritten laws of proper behavior and conduct in a social or professional context. There are many things that may seem like common sense and manners that can actually be considered art etiquette.

For those who might be wondering what the etiquette of art is, here is a brief guide. Rules of etiquette are often unwritten but they still exist and they are just as important as the rules that are written down.

This article will introduce you to some of the most common categories of the art world, how to approach them and what to expect from them.

Like many other fields, the art world has rules, guidelines and unwritten laws that are followed by the majority of professional artists. Being aware of these rules is important for both the beginning and the established artist.

The following is a list of the most important rules in the art world. Some of these rules may seem obvious to you, while others may be a surprise. What they all have in common is that you should become familiar with them if you are an emerging artist:

1. Never, ever talk about your prices or commissions/sales.

1. Keep your voice down in the art room.

2. Do not make comments about others work in the art room.

3. Do not leave your artwork up for more than two weeks, unless it is for critique.

4. If you are critiquing someone’s artwork, make sure you have something constructive to say.

5. Respect other’s opinions about their own artwork.
