6 Ways to be Present

Hi. I’m Sajan, a Biomedical Engineer. Last month I had the opportunity to visit a local art museum here in San Diego and I must say I was beyond impressed. It was quite an eye opener for me as to how much art has evolved over the years and how many different ways there are to express oneself.

This article is more of a “blog” than a helpful article since it’s based on my experience visiting the museum and all the different things that caught my attention while I was there.

So without further delay, here are 6 ways you can be present; most of which you can easily do at home or at your local museum (if you live near one).

1) See the world through someone else’s eyes – One of the pieces I saw at the museum was a series of pictures created by an artist named Amy Sol ( http://www.amysolart.com ). She has taken pictures from her life and turned them into paintings which are then hung on the walls with black frames around them. In each painting, she has painted herself in some way: usually hiding somewhere in the background or blending in with her surroundings making it difficult to spot her at first glance. The idea behind this is to see yourself in a different

In order to be present, you have to disconnect from the past and future, and connect with the now. You have to try to live in the moment. But it is not easy to achieve this state, being present all the time.

Trying to achieve presence could be overwhelming if you thought it required that you feel happy at all times. It doesn’t. Being present can be just as difficult when you are in pain as when you are having fun. The difference is that when you are in pain, you want relief; but with presence, relief is the goal. This blog will address how one can become more present and find relief through Yoga, Meditation and other practices that help cultivate presence.

I’m guessing most of us aren’t quite sure what this means. I think we can all agree that being present is better than not being present, but beyond that we’re not really sure what it looks like or how to do it.

What does it mean to be present? It’s difficult to explain, but here are 6 ways that you can be more present in your life.

1. Get Rid of the TV

There’s nothing wrong with watching TV, if that’s what you want to do, but I highly recommend removing it from your life. It will allow you to spend more quality time with your friends and family and it will allow you to focus more on the things that are most important in your life.

2. Be Here Now (Don’t Think About the Past or Future)

When you’re doing something right now, fully engaged in the moment, then you are being present. If you’re thinking about something that happened in the past or worrying about something in the future then you’re not being present. You have to let go of those thoughts and be fully engaged with whatever is happening right now in order for you to be truly here now.

3. Do What You Love

I’ve said this before: To really live your life

Recently I’ve been thinking about ways to be present. What does it mean to be present? Being present is a state of existence, where you are only focused on what is happening in the now. It’s about being aware of what is going on around you right now and not letting your thoughts drift off elsewhere. Being present is something that we should do all the time but our minds wander so much and get distracted by all kinds of thoughts and other issues that we often forget that we are just “here” right now. It can be hard to remember to stay present but there are a few things you can do to help yourself achieve this mental state.

Today’s blog post is an attempt to compile the most important ways to be present. Each of these points are supported by a book and chapter number to help you read more on the subject. Enjoy!

1. Be completely honest with yourself and others.

2. Embrace discomfort and uncertainty.

5. Live in the moment.

7. Practice mindfulness.

8 . Slow down, relax and enjoy life’s simple pleasures.”
