I have learned a lot about freelance art creation in my time working with many different clients. Here are some helpful tips for anyone who is trying to get started or improve their skills.
When it comes to making money creating art for a living, you need to be very professional in your approach to the task. The way you present yourself to clients is extremely important and can help you succeed in this business. Here are five things I’ve learned about being professional and successful as an artist:
1. Be prepared:
Before every meeting with a client you should do some research on them, their company and their industry. You should also prepare a short presentation showing some of your portfolio pieces that best display your talents and style. This will show them that you are organized and that you know what you’re doing when it comes to art creation.
2. Don’t criticize work you aren’t familiar with:
The last thing you want to do is make someone think less of their own work when they are trying to show it off to potential clients. Make sure that any comments you make about their work are
A lot of information is out there about how to make art for a living. How to get clients, how to negotiate fees, what supplies to use, how much time you should dedicate towards marketing, and so on.
However, I have found there is very little out there on what it’s like to actually create art for others. There’s a lot of advice on how to do it, but few people are willing to share what it feels like. What I’ve learned, and continue to learn, about being an artist is that it’s not just a job. It changes who you are and how you see the world. And this makes me want others who are making a living as an artist to share their experiences.

1. Art should be created for yourself, not for others.
This may seem counter-intuitive. After all, if you are a professional creating art to make money, you are creating it to sell. But that is not the same thing as creating art to please clients. The former may be necessary in order to earn a living but the latter is undesirable because it creates a situation where you are constantly trying to second guess what your client wants instead of doing what you want.
Trying to please the client can also make you feel like your work is being judged, which can be very stressful when you realize that you cannot satisfy every individual’s taste or vision.
On the other hand, when you create art for yourself it feels like play, which is fun and relieving. You are in control and not constantly worrying about whether or not your client will like it or how much money it will make for you.
Art should be fun! So create it for yourself and don’t worry about pleasing others because no one likes their own children more than they like themselves.”
