1. Alberto Giacometti, L’homme qui marche I (Walking Man I), $101.3 million

Signed “A Giacometti,” one of only five examples made and one of three in private hands; sold by Christie’s New York to an unidentified telephone bidder on May 2, 2010

Alberto Giacometti, L’homme qui marche I (Walking Man I) was created in 1961 as part of a series of sculptures done by Giacometti. The series was meant to represent the human figure in motion, and this piece shows a man walking in the desert. Since it was done in 1961, it is not surprising that this sculpture sold for $100 million or more. It shows a man walking with his arms up and his head back so that he can see what is around him as he walks forward. This sculpture shows us how to walk without being distracted by anything else going on around us.
