Artists can find inspiration in the public domain for art, text, music and more. Public Domain means the work is free for you to use and make your own. The material may be older but it is still available to inspire you today.

The public domain is full of stories, images, music and more that you can use to create your own creations. Take a look around and see what inspires you. You never know where your next idea will come from so why not start looking now?

The public domain is the space of creative material that can be used without permission or payment. It’s enormous, and each person’s experience with it is different. I want to highlight some ways that artists can use it in their work, and some places you might look for material.

The Public Domain is a vast realm of artistic opportunity. It encompasses the works of many cultures and time periods, free for anyone to use as they see fit. These works can be found online in public domain databases, or digitized by dedicated volunteers.

Tutorials, books and other resources are available to guide artists through the process of finding and using these resources. This wiki is one such resource, designed to encourage a community of sharing and collaboration between artists and educators who wish to make use of PD art.

The pages below provide an introduction to the Public Domain, links and descriptions of various databases, tutorials on using them, a directory of PD art sites, and PD image archives.

“Hey, you can’t use that! That’s in the public domain.”

You hear it all the time. If a work is in the public domain, you can use it however you want. It’s up for grabs. No one owns it. It’s free for you to use.

The thing is, if you know how copyright and public domain work, you can make much greater use of public domain material than most people realize. But first, let’s talk about what “public domain” actually means…

If you’re working on a serious project, you might want to consider using public domain material in your work. Public domain material is any kind of work that is not protected by copyright law. This means that the original artist who created it no longer has control over how it’s used.Because public domain material is free for anyone to use, you may find yourself wanting to create something completely new from this source. However, if you plan to include public domain material in your work, there are two things to consider:

1. Not all public domain material is created equal. Some of it is in the public domain because the copyright was never renewed. This means that a later artist can claim these works as his or her own and begin enforcing a copyright on them again. Even if the work isn’t being enforced as a copyright anymore, it’s still smart to check and see if there’s a newer version of the same piece of art out there before using it in your work.

2. You need to give credit where credit is due! When you use public domain art in your own work, make sure the artist who created it gets their due credit.

A lot of the art I create these days is based on public domain materials, which means they’re free and anyone can use them. The only thing I ask is that you link back to my site if you use any of my images.

This blog will mainly be about how to find public domain images, but also about different techniques for using them in your artwork. I’ll also occasionally post original art as well.

I hope you enjoy the blog!

There is a vast amount of art from the past that you can use without permission. Here are a few examples:

1. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City has over 2 million works of art in its collection, and most of them are available to artists. You can make any image from their collection into your own work of art.

2. The British Library has over 150,000 digitized books, including many old books that have expired copyright protection. You can make any image from those books into your own work of art.

3. Google Books has digitized more than 15 million books in over 50 languages, and many more are being added every day. You can make any image from these books into your own work of art.

4. Prints of some paintings by famous artists are still under copyright protection. But many famous paintings, especially those created before about 1880 or so, are available for artists to use as reference material in their own works of art without asking permission or paying royalties to anyone (this is because the copyright on a painting expires long before the painting itself wears out).

5. The U.S. government has produced thousands of photographs that can be used by artists in their own works of art without asking permission or paying royalties
