Mermaids have been around for centuries and their beauty and grace has been captivating people’s imaginations for years. Most of the myths about the mermaids come from Ireland and Scotland but there are also some other places where they have been sighted.

Each culture has its own variation of the mermaid legend. In China, for instance, mermaids were seen as evil spirits. In the Middle East, they were believed to be benevolent. The Greek version is the most famous version of the mermaid legend. According to Greek mythology, mermaids were half-woman and half-fish creatures who lived in deep waters. They were beautiful women from head to waist; below that they had scales and fins. Mermaids were often portrayed as sirens who lured sailors to their deaths with their enchanting music.
In some versions of the legend, mermaids fell in love with humans and married them. They would then have children together (half-human, half-mermaid). These children became known as “mermans” or “mermaids.” Mermen were also said to be able to live on land but spent most of their time under water. Some believe that merfolk are not just part fish; they are actually sea creatures that can live on land for short periods of time.*
Mermaid art is a genre of art that focuses on the mermaid. Mermaids have been depicted in various ways, often as beautiful women with the tail of a fish. The first mermaid was described by Homer in the 8th century BCE. According to Ovid, mermaids would sing and dance to sailors who fell asleep on their ship’s deck.
Towards the end of the 12th century, mermaids were featured in calendar illustrations and other works of art. Between 1420 and 1450, Hans Pleydenwurff painted a series of frescos depicting scenes with mermaids.
In 1753, John Frederick Miller created a sculpture called “The Mermaid”. It was regarded as one of the greatest sculptures of all time. In 1878, Franz Josef Lindauer created another famous sculpture called “Die Meerjungfrau”. In 1909, Hans Christian Andersen’s story “The Little Mermaid” was published for the first time.*
