I am a professional painter. I’ve been painting for over 20 years and I’m currently working on my own gallery show. I’ll be detailing some of my techniques here and answering questions left in the comments.

Try not to be too down on yourself though, it’s easy to become frustrated with painting when we’re all used to quick results from our modern technology. It takes patience, practice, and dedication but it will be worth it!

You’ll also find links to books, videos and other resources that I have found useful in my own journey in learning how to paint.

There are so many things to consider when painting. Don’t worry, it’s not hard at all, just you need to choose which way to go.

For example, do you want to follow the traditional way of oil painting? Or do you want a faster way?

If you want a faster way there are so many options, like how to use acrylics or watercolors. But if you’re an artist who wants to learn how to paint using one of these techniques, it is always very important to make sure that you’re learning the right way.

Let me tell you a story:

When I was younger I decided that I wanted to learn how to paint in watercolor. At first everything seemed great, but after a few months I noticed something strange: my paintings were starting to lack depth and realism. They looked flat, which wasn’t good because I wanted them to look real!

So what was the problem?

The problem was that I was trying to be too fast! Instead of learning the techniques from experts and let them guide me in the way I should go (which is often more complex than just choosing one method), I decided “to save time” and find a shortcut. It’s always important to know what you are trying to achieve when you paint. Painting is an art and therefore very personal, but there are ways to make painting a better experience.

In this blog I will write about the things that I have learned over the years and hopefully some of it can be of use to you.        So start by making a palette, get some paints and brushes, make sure you have plenty of light for the colors so you can see how well they blend together, and start experimenting with colors.

This is the first thing to understand about learning to paint: you will not learn to paint by reading a blog or watching some videos or visiting an art museum. The reason is simple: you do not see pictures when you look at a painting; you see the painting. The skill of seeing paintings is different from seeing other things and requires special practice. And that may sound obvious, but it is not: many beginners focus on the wrong thing—on what they think they are looking at—and so never get past that stage.

Trying to learn painting from a blog or a book or an art class is like trying to learn tennis by reading books about tennis, or like trying to learn mathematics by studying books on mathematics. You might pick up some useful facts, but that’s not the same as learning how to play tennis or do mathematics.

If you want to learn how to paint, there are two ways to go about it: copy what other artists have done, and create paintings yourself. Copying other artists is the best way for most people: it will appeal more if you are more of a fan of art than of painting, and it will help you develop skills faster.
