House design and construction evolved over many years using techniques and materials that were sometimes risky to health, structural integrity, and energy efficiency. Fortunately, new building techniques as well as remodeling techniques make green solutions available to most homeowners.

You can tell a lot about any house by its exterior appearance, from functional design details to its general cleanliness, landscaping and maintenance. Look at the house from the street – does it look cared for? Are bushes trimmed neatly? Is there litter on the property? Are stairs safe

The location. The most important feature of a house is its location. If you have to drive more than five minutes to get to work, school or stores, then you might not like that area. Additionally, if the area has high crime rates or poor schools, then you will also want to reconsider buying there.

The layout of the house as well as what it looks like from the outside can tell you a lot about the neighborhood. A good exterior can make up for a less than stellar inside but not vice versa. Many people like a house with a big yard and lots of trees surrounding it.

Trees that are close to the house can actually be a drawback because they will have to be trimmed and maintained regularly.
